Letter from Travis Imel, Chief Student Affairs Officer, Gallaudet University

Updated: May 13

Dear Hillel at Gallaudet, Jewish Deaf Community and Allies,

We want to take a moment to acknowledge the concerns many of you have expressed regarding the presence of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at Gallaudet University and how this impacts the safety and well-being of Jewish Deaf students.

Hillel at Gallaudet University has been in direct communication with Gallaudet’s administration to seek clarification and advocate for our students and community members. We recently received a letter from Travis Imel, Chief Student Affairs Officer, affirming that:

  • Students for Justice in Palestine is not a recognized student organization at Gallaudet.

  • The Instagram account @sjpgallaudet is not affiliated with or endorsed by the University, and steps are being taken to address the unauthorized use of Gallaudet's name.

We deeply appreciate the University’s willingness to clarify their position and their continued commitment to ensuring a respectful and inclusive campus for all students.

We share this update to foster transparency, support, and unity within our community. Hillel@Gallaudet remains dedicated to providing a safe, empowering space for Jewish students and allies, and we continue to engage in open and constructive dialogue with University leadership.

With gratitude,

Sofia Seitchik

Program Director
