Dear members of the Jewish Deaf community,
We have heard from several of you about concerns after Gallaudet's recent commencement ceremony. What should have been an inclusive celebration of ALL graduates was disrupted by some who wore keffiyehs and one graduate who displayed a “Palestine will be free” sign during the diploma ceremony—captured in a widely circulated photo.
We understand there’s some disagreement with President Cordano's approach to the situation. I’m writing to update all of you that we’ve spoken with her and other senior administrators extensively to share concerns from the Jewish Deaf community.
Thankfully, Gallaudet has committed to taking meaningful steps in response, including reviewing its processes to better manage any similar situations in the future. We’re hopeful the Gallaudet administration will continue to productively work with us to support the Jewish community, as they’ve been very supportive overall.
Last year, Gallaudet passionately supported the creation of an innovative ASL film entitled “Antisemitism—A Long History of Hatred,” which received an incredibly positive response.
Additionally, President Cordano has sponsored and hosted a Passover event over the past two years, expressing her desire to continue this tradition annually.
Notably, Gallaudet publicly stated that they do not endorse Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) as a part of student organizations.
Their commitment speaks volumes.
This significant process would not be possible without the leadership of Sofia Seitchik, our Hillel Program Director. We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude to her for her unwavering dedication. Sofia has devoted countless hours out of a profound commitment to Jewish Deaf life at Gallaudet.
Sofia and the Hillel at Gallaudet board members have been very effective in liaising between the Jewish Deaf community and the Gallaudet administration, ensuring that Jewish students feel safe, supported, and respected on campus.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. We are here, we are listening, and we welcome continued dialogue as we move forward together.
Warmly,
Allon Yomtov
Chair, Hillel at Gallaudet University Board
